So Close No Matter How Far

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know (yeah!)

Hetfield explained the song  – “It’s about being on the road, missing someone at home…” to Mojo magazine on December 2008. At the beginning he did not play it to the other members of Metallica as their songs are usually about destroying things, head banging, bleeding for the crowd, and were not about emotions related to men and women. Indeed, the song was very private to Hetfield, it was about his girlfriend at that time, written for himself and only after drummer Lars Ulrich heard it was it considered for the record and eventually turned out to be a pretty big hit song for Metallica.

Singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield wrote this song while he was on the phone with his girlfriend holding the phone with one hand while plucking the four open strings of a standard E-minor chord with the other, which later became the two famous bars of the song. The lyrics were also dedicated to his girlfriend talking about being “so close, no matter how far” to indicate the bond they shared even when they were apart.
